Top lists / Water for humidifiers
Best water for humidifiers
Distilled water, as the EPA and CPSC advise. These have the lowest published dissolved minerals.
Criterion: Still water with published TDS of 10 mg/L or less (including “not detected”), from the brand’s own verified analysis. Lowest first; ties are ordered by Waterphile Score. These are distilled and purified waters; the EPA notes distillation removes the most minerals.
Follow your humidifier maker’s instructions first; some ask for tap water or their own filters. Empty, clean and dry the tank often whatever water you use.
Why it matters
Ultrasonic and cool-mist humidifiers spray the minerals in tap water into the air as “white dust”, and minerals build up as scale where bacteria and mould can grow. The EPA and CPSC advise distilled or demineralised water (or the maker’s demineralisation cartridge), changing the water daily, cleaning every third day and keeping humidity at 30–50%. Steam (warm-mist) units release far fewer minerals.

FAQ
Can I use tap water in a humidifier?
You can, but the EPA says ultrasonic and cool-mist humidifiers spray tap-water minerals into the air as white dust and build scale where microbes grow. It recommends distilled water or a demineralisation cartridge.
Is purified water as good as distilled for a humidifier?
Often close. The EPA says distillation removes the most minerals; reverse osmosis and deionisation remove most but are generally less effective. Check the TDS on the label.
