Best electrolyte water: the most electrolytes per litre

Bottled waters ranked by sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium combined, from published analyses.

Criterion: Waters (still or sparkling) that publish all four of sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium in a verified analysis, with at least 100 mg/L combined, ranked by that total (highest first). Waters sold as “electrolyte water” are listed in a second section with their values.

Not medical advice. If you have kidney or heart disease or high blood pressure, ask your doctor before choosing high-sodium or high-potassium water.

Why it matters

Electrolytes are minerals such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and chloride. Most people get enough from food, and CDC/NIOSH says plain water plus regular meals usually keeps water and salt in balance; electrolyte drinks help mainly when you sweat for several hours. Many bottled “electrolyte waters” add only small amounts, often less than a natural mineral water. For scale, adults need roughly 3,400–4,700 mg of potassium and 310–420 mg of magnesium a day.

FAQ

Do I need electrolyte water?

Most people don’t. CDC/NIOSH says plain water and regular meals usually keep water and salt in balance; drinks with electrolytes help when you sweat for several hours.

Which water has the most electrolytes?

Highly mineralised waters such as bicarbonate-rich spa waters contain far more sodium, magnesium and calcium per litre than most bottled “electrolyte waters”. They can also be very high in sodium.
