Water for gastritis: what the evidence says
No water treats gastritis. These mineral waters are bicarbonate-rich and low in sulphate; still versions (no bubble icon) are the gentler choice.
Criterion: Published bicarbonate of 600 mg/L or more, sulphate of 200 mg/L or less and sodium of 200 mg/L or less, from the brand’s own verified analysis. Highest bicarbonate first. Sulphate-rich waters are left out because they can have a laxative effect. Sparkling waters (bubble icon) are included; the 2023 heartburn trial used a still water. This list does not say any water helps gastritis.
Not medical advice. No water treats or cures a medical condition. If you have symptoms most days, or trouble swallowing, vomiting or weight loss, see a doctor or pharmacist. See also our water for acid reflux list.
Why it matters
The US NIDDK says eating, diet and nutrition don’t play an important role in causing most cases of gastritis; common causes are H. pylori infection, some painkillers and heavy drinking, which need a doctor’s care. There is no trial of mineral water for gastritis. The closest evidence is a 2023 heartburn trial of a still, bicarbonate-rich water (see the acid reflux page). Plain still water is a sensible default.
