Best water for houseplants

Tap water is fine for most plants. For fluoride-sensitive ones, rainwater or distilled water is the usual advice; these bottled waters are low in sodium.

Criterion: Still water with published sodium of 10 mg/L or less and TDS or dry residue of 200 mg/L or less, from the brand’s own verified analysis. Lowest sodium first; ties are ordered by Waterphile Score. Fluoride is not part of our data, so check the label if your plant is fluoride-sensitive.

Flush pots with plenty of water now and then to stop salts building up, whatever water you use.

Why it matters

Most houseplants do fine on tap water. Softened water is the main one to avoid: it swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium, which builds up in the pot and harms roots. Some plants, such as spider plants, dracaenas, peace lilies and some palms, get brown leaf tips from the fluoride added to some tap water; extension services suggest rainwater, distilled or reverse-osmosis water for them. Chlorine usually clears if water stands overnight.

FAQ

Is tap water bad for houseplants?

Not for most plants. Softened water is the main one to avoid because of its sodium. Fluoride-sensitive plants such as spider plants and dracaenas may do better on rainwater or distilled water.
