Best water for steam irons

Most irons are built for tap water. In hard-water areas, makers suggest mixing in distilled or demineralised water.

Criterion: Still water with published TDS or dry residue of 50 mg/L or less and hardness of 25 mg/L as CaCO3 or less (worked out from published calcium and magnesium), from the brand’s own verified analysis. Lowest TDS first; ties are ordered by Waterphile Score. Check your iron’s manual before using any of them on their own.

Your iron’s manual comes first. Several makers advise against pure distilled water, so these are best used to soften hard tap water in a mix.

Why it matters

Makers differ. Philips says its irons are designed for tap water but suggests distilled or demineralised water (or a 50/50 mix) where water is hard, to slow scale. Rowenta and Tefal say to use untreated tap water, mix 50/50 with distilled water only if your water is very hard, and not to use pure distilled or demineralised water, scented water or most bottled water. Hard water leaves limescale that can block steam holes and cause white flakes.

FAQ

Should I use distilled water in my iron?

Check your manual. Philips suggests distilled or demineralised water (or a 50/50 mix) in hard-water areas. Rowenta and Tefal say to use tap water, mix 50/50 only if water is very hard, and never use pure distilled water.
